So I’m like, kind of almost done with Home Is A Name, but I needed a break that was something short and not simultaneously shmoopy and traumatizing.
OH GOD. JUST. I HATE MYSELF FOR LOVING THIS. I HATE MYSELF HAAARRRRD. And it makes me all sad, at the same time, that we are now Bob-less. I think I’ve been in denial about that like, since I heard. SAAAAD.

Frank has The Sims 2 on his laptop, but really old, without any of the fancy expansion packs or anything. One day while Frank is on the phone with Jamia, Bob makes a tiny Sim version of himself, and a tiny house with no doors and nothing in it but a stove, and lets it run.

Frank won't speak to him for two days.

That. That right there. Made me inhale Lean Pocket up my nose.
It hurts.

(I've Loved) Everything About You That Hurts - a bittersweet little gen-ish fic, really nice.

CJ Cregg Never Had This Problem - LOLARIOUS West Wing au. Just read it, you won't regret it.


Q&A, in which we venture into the wonderful land of Pete/Mikey, if only in a peripheral fashion to begin with.

Committing to Heart and Hospital - Pete/Mikey fic set during the so-called Summer of Like, when FOB and MCR toured together on Warped Tour. This, um, might count as schmoop by your standards, but it's really well-written schmoop?

Okay, so while I was working on figuring out which PATD fics to rec you I also discovered a bunch of awesome MCR and FOB fics that I'd SOMEHOW OVERLOOKED, so have these as an interlude!

These fics are all by mahoni, who is awesome.
Never Did Run Smooth, in which Frank decides it would be hilarious to get Bob and Gerard almost-married in the state of Connecticut without telling them. Bob and Gerard are not amused.

Better When It's Real - in which there is PORN, and it is hot.

The Planets Align You Just Like Mars - early MCR fic, from when Bob toured with them for free because he's awesome that way. &bob;

Frank Has Died of Dysentery - this is what happens when half of MCR comes down with the Death and Gerard is left on his own for a whole day.

Find Out What It Means - this is a Pete/Patrick fic, and is not so light as the rest of these recs have been. I dunno if you'll like it or not, but the writing is good enough that I'll rec it anyways.

Um, this post is going to be insane. These fics are roughly divided into three categories: "canon"-ish fics, sufficiently-crazy-AUs-that-they-get-their-own-section, and high school/college AUs. :D Feel free to skip to the last section first~

Canon-ish fics! (by which I generally mean, the boys are still in bands. Weird stuff may still happen to them, but the bands exist in 95% of these.) In no particular order:

here, where the daylight begins - future fic, and is a combo PATD & MCR fic. Mainly features Ryan and Gerard, and is among my top ten favorite bandom fics ever, I would say.

But you can't be missed - this fic is tagged in my bookmarks as 'only BRENDON would time travel accidentally.' I'll leave you with that.

The Ratio of Freckles to Stars - let's have some Ryan/Spencer magical realism! Seriously good fic.

Spencer Smith Saved My Gay Cred (And All I Got Was This Sparkly T-Shirt) - unrepentant fluff, but awesome fluff. Features obnoxious!Pete, as well!

Into the Woods - ahahaha, here we come to the first epic of the bunch. Spencer and Brendon are sucked into a book of fairy tales and half to work their way through them to get out. MCR & FOB peeps abound as well. I know the premise sounds weird but this fic is fucking awesome.

We Started From - hay, so there's this thing in Panic fandom called the group-sex-fic. This is one of the better ones for getting that sort of shenanigans set up. Try it, you may like it!

And A Man Can Raise A Thirst - short piece about the time Brendon got heatstroke and threw up on stage when they were touring in SE Asia. ):

Falling Into Place - and this one is about the time somebody chucked a bottle at Brendon's head at a concert in Reading. All the bad stuff happens to Brendon. )))):

Courtship in 4/4 Time - Spencer/Brendon courtship-through-percussion cuteness thing.

Five Times Brendon Fell Asleep in Someone's Lap - Fluff? Character piece? Both? YOU DECIDE.

Jon Jacob... - another short by Dira Sudis, to cap it all off.


In addition, here's a few canon-ish fics that deal with The Split:

Spencer Smith and the Perils of the Junk Drawer - this one's more like leading up to the split, and is Spencer/Brendon-ish. Short.

A Field Guide to Ryan Rosses, by Spencer J. Smith, Esq. - this one deals directly with it, and is quite, quite good.

If This is Settling Down - another one that focuses on the split, and features The Like. Not so good as A Field Guide, but still decent.

I liked Here, Where The Daylight Begins. I finished it last night and I enjoy how like, calm and understated it is. My PATD time continuum blows, though, so like, I had to come home and check a shitload of facts. I'm assuming it was written before the breakup, yeah? I mean, duh. 2007. But like. It kept throwing me off because I was like WHAT ARE ALL THESE ALBUM NAMES I DON'T RECOGNIZE AND WHY IS GERARD 40?! GERARD IS NOT 40. THERE ARE NOT EIGHT MCR ALBUMS. ...OHWAIT. FICTION. :D But yeah, I enjoyed it. Though I do get a bit bored with tragic!Ryan at times.

I don't think I've mentioned A Man Can Raise A Thirst yet? It was precious. Not gross. Just. Sweet. ♥

The Five Times one was also cute. Not my favorite thing ever, but extremely easy to picture. Mostly because there are generally... Pictures. Of this nature. OH, BRENDON. WHY SO FLOPPY?

Jon Jacob... made me really happy. I love her writing just in general, but I liked the little twist of Brendon and Jon being together, like. SURPRISE! Very sneaky. I approve.

Annnnnnd I started Into The Woods last night. I'm on the first chapter, and I already love it. PRINCESS SPENCER. Oh godddddd. I'd be further if I hadn't gotten distracted watching A Weekend At Pete Rose's about a dozen times and having a minor tantrum about Pete Wentz having gone to one of my grad school picks. And Google image-searching Spencer Smith. Again.

The Uncharted Sea - AHAHA ANOTHER EPIC FOR YOUU. This one also features a combo of MCR and PATD folks, and is fjadlfjsaf undescribably awesome. Pirates! and precogs! and sailing! and quests! and Blackbeard! and stuff! It is tasty like a tasty thing, and is also by Mahoni, who I have previously pimped to you.

Lessons in Finding Unicorns - PATD and FOB fic! And, uh, this may be a Borrowers!au. Yes. It's good, I swear!

And Some You Do For - this one is really cool, and also v. prettily illustrated! Kind of a magic shop AU.

Wednesday Night Boys - the Panic boys-as-hookers fic. Yup.

In Both Our Skies - okay, this one's a bit off-the-wall even for me, but I liked it - doctor who au short! Ryan/Z.


Aaand, last but not least, the high school and college AU assortment. High school first!

Before or Since series - okay, so manipulant? The same person who wrote Into the Woods and A Field Guide up there? She wrote this series of short drabble-y fics focusing on the Panic boys at various stages of their school lives (and earlier, in the case of Spencer & Ryan since they've been friends forever), and they are fucking perfect. Like, seriously spot on. It starts at one and goes on up; she jumps around chronologically, but all the drabbles are also tagged with when they're set.

Like the Tide - Spencer-and-Ryan as foster kids AU. Long, occasionally angsty, and breathtakingly awesome.

For Keeps - Brendon/Ryan high school au, and also majorly features MCR folks. Kind of dark. This one's the first part of a 'verse, and I'd definitely recommend reading the rest if you like this one.

Pomp and Circumstance - okay, climbing out of the well of angst now... a short set around Ryan's graduation, nice character piece.


Accidentally In Love - first of the college au section! Cute Spencer/Brendon piece.

Common Circuitry Problems - moar college au, set in, uh, some futuristic college land in which people can take classes which allow them to build robots. I'll let you discover the rest from there.

Hand Me Down - okay, I'll give a schmoop warning for this one, but it has Brendon being a Big Damn Hero so I am reccing it anyways. ♥

You heard me talk about the For Keeps thing while you were here, but I finished the whole series. I'm sure you won't be surprised that I had a hard time getting through/caring about the Pete one. Psh. WHATEVER, DRAMA QUEEN. Is pretty much always my reaction to Mr Wentz. But anyway. I was amused by the thing comparing Tom and Gerard and their alcoholisms etc, mostly because, ironically, after everyone is all OMG GERARD YOU'RE SO AMAZING AND PERFECT FOR QUITTING DRINKING LIKE THAT LET'S WRITE ALL THE FANFIC ABOUT IT EVER, he's all LOL GUYS WHATEVER I DO WHAT I WANT.

I'm referring to the SPIN article. Duh. But yeah.

Like The Tide

This is getting a little ridiculous, but whatthefuckever. HAVE ANOTHER REACTIONARY COMMENT, DEARY.

I just finished Like The Tide, which I was (admittedly and ultimately) prepared to hate. Like, crazy-burning-righteous-passion hate.

But then... I didn't. I actually liked it. Kind of a lot in places.

You may have noticed (ahem) that I have kind of explosive negative reactions to stuff involving like, any kind of abuse and related topics? Which PATD fic seems riddled with. To understate. ANYWAY. Blame my job. My upbringing. My grad apps. My work with system kids and sexual assault victims and underage prostitutes etc. The blatant inaccuracy and, frankly, romanticizing and exploitation of it makes my skin fucking crawl. Buuuuut again, somehow, this fic didn't do that. YAAAAY VICTORY! I mean, there were moments, but mostly I just really enjoyed like, idk. The subtlety? When there was subtlety? And the mixed format with emails and IMs and how it all felt very cataloged.

Oh, and yeah. I'm aware that I mostly sound like I think I'm better than everyone. It's cool. I know.

Regardless, I love it when fics surprise me into liking them. It's one of my favorite fic-related happenings. And um. Can I just add how reading Ryan/Spencer weirds me out just a tiny bit if only because it seriously seriously reminds me of like. Ange and I? There are all these creepy life-event parallels and we met at the same age and like. According to every law of fic in the universe we should apparently be like, all over each other or something. It cracks me up and kind of makes me want to throw things. And then hide under my bed forever. It's so fucking dorky.
