Ugh, this has taken me long enough.

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] manipulant, I hope you love me with all of your bourbon heart, okay?

Two more for the Into The Woods set. (And I post in the order they were drawn, not the order of the chapters. Just... FYI. Like it matters.)

I feel like at this point it's mostly pointless/redundant to state just how completely I employ the term "loosely based upon", but for posterity. VERY. VERY LOOSELY BASED UPON.

Frankelstilskin

In what was probably one of the most appropriate casting decisions made within fandom, Frank Iero plays a guitar-toting Rumpelstiltskin. Strums straw into gold and doles out free relationship advice. Bonus penis-having recognition abilities.

The Pea Episode

WAITWAITWAIT HEAR ME OUT, IT MAKES SENSE, I PROMISE. Well. Kind of it does.
So the Princess And The Pea. Better known as the Pea Episode. I had no idea what to draw, because it's all... tame. Like, nothing really horrible happens to anybody, there's no impending doom, no swan-dives into giant piles of thorns. Everyone is kind of cranky and petulant, but that doesn't exactly translate to my, uh. Style. If you could call it that. But then there's this creepy-ass dream sequence with pseudo-zombie Brendon ([livejournal.com profile] manipulant, correct me if my interpretation's wrong) that goes all nuts and starts pushing people off cliffs and just being all sketchy all over the place. So duh. Artistic license blah blah excuse to draw creepy veiny organ-chair blah.

and night comes to Tallahassee

This just sort of happened while I was listening to Oceanographer's Choice on repeat. John Darnielle writes some of my most very favorite words.

And a bonus doodle!

you are my anchor

My Man Without Wax fangirling, let me show you it.
Although, I'm pretty sure that when they put You are my anchor on their band shirts, they meant it in the nice way.
...Ohwell.

Bigger, shinier versions here, at my Blogspot.

I wish I had the kind of attention to detail you put into clothing, I'm so much more ~vague~ with clothing. scribbly swirls that imply intricate embroidery rather than actual detail? It's mostly why I avoid inking. inking implies I should actually make it look neater/more finished.

I like pencil line arts, they're awesome. I think digital just looks flashier than it actually is you know? like BAM LOOK AT ALL MY COLOURS AND SHINY and pencil art is just subtle and like 'yeah, well, I'm actually amazing, you just might miss it because digital art was distracting you with it's FLASHY.'

I prefer to draw traditionally, there's something weird about drawing with a tablet, because you're not looking at your hand, but the screen? (you have no idea how much I want a wacom cintiq, it's like the solution to all my digital drawing woes.) but I like digital best for colouring. you have more freedom to mess it up; change colours etc etc. it's also cheaper. I don't have to buy a new marker if I want a different shade of red.

I get... obsessive. Like the week I figured out how to draw decent paisley? Ye gods. Mostly I just look at A LOT of band photoshoots and some fashion show stuff. My room mate, [livejournal.com profile] aquidis, is really into Alexander McQueen's stuff, and she showed me some of his shows from back in the day, and a lot of my costume ideas come from that. And Panic! shoots. I mean holy shit, you wanna talk about inspiration for detail? Ryan fucking Ross, ladies and gentlemen. The kid can rock some crazy shit. (one of my favorite things ever is pictures of him in like, a plaid onesie or whatever, looking totally bitchin' while the rest of his band is scattered around in similar regency-wear looking SUPER SUPER AWKWARD OHGOD WHAT.)

I think your style works for you, though. Like. You make the semi-vague work. I can't do that to save my life, and sometimes I feel like I lose a lot of emotion and mood in favor of just tackling ever detail ever and making myself crazy.

...Not gonna lie, I feel the same way about pencil art vs digital. It drives me nuts. I'm over here spending fucking DAYS on this stuff that's just kinda... bland, idk, while everyone's distracted with shiny things. And I can't really blame them, but I also haven't been able to force myself to get on that particular band wagon.

We had a studio full of cintiqs when I was in school, and they were pretty rad. Still not the same for me, though, idk. I used them for digital arts studio stuff, but I'm never as happy as when I'm an inky, graphite-smudged mess. I totally agree about the colors, though. Hot damn but Copics are expensive shit.

oh dude, my attempts to draw paisley = "tear droppy shapes WITH PETALS! :D " I'm impressed if anyone can draw that properly. (and unf, alexander mcqueen. his stuff was so fucking gorgeous. I love the stuff his partner has been doing recently though. Have you seen the like, black leafy-vine stuff she's done? [i do not know collections, I'd have to ask my fashion!friends :D] wow.)

also damn do I miss the early panic days, with all the circus costumes and stuff. SO much fun. I think bandom bands are at their best when they're making themed!music videos, well not best, but I'm most entertained. :D

and your style totally works; i love all the detail in it, it gives it a different kind of life; it's enthralling, like you look at it and go 'oh that's nice!' but then, you stop, and look closer, and wow.

sometimes I wish I could just draw something in pencil and think 'yeah, that's finished now' but then idk, it just doesn't feel finished till i've coloured it. I'm a bit of a junkie for colours. I just... love messing with them, and if it's black and white it feels empty to me.

I'm such a computer kid, like I ~can~ colour traditionally, but I'm just better at it digitally. I was never too interested in trad colouring outside of like, watercolour and copic markers (and at $10 a marker? ouch. copics, be cheaper dudes.) but I used to mess around with it more when I was living with my family - my mother is an art teacher, I could borrow art supplies from her school when I wanted to experiment. Now I have to buy them. D:

I do seriously love india ink though, and wish I used it more. That stuff dries and layers in the prettiest way! (rant rant rant, I'm getting so ranty in this reply, tangents all over the shop. sorry!)

Paisley is my current favorite thing ever. Whenever you get back to my Sunshine Machine piece, you'll see where it started. I spent most of an afternoon after work sitting on the couch fucking cackling as I drew it. Not that I'm nuts or anything. What.

I haven't been keeping up with her stuff, no, but I've seen some of it here and there (Kate's wedding gown, wasn't it?), and yeah. I approve. And now I need to see these leafy viney things. Fall/Winter '06 show is my happy place.

I don't miss the circus thing, per se. I feel like it was way overdone and kind of ridiculous. But the early foursome shoots for magazines and whatever? Oh god yes. There's this jacket Spencer's wearing in one, the same shoot as the plaid onesie, actually, that I have a lot of dirty thoughts about ALL THE TIME. Not Spencer. The jacket. I feel that needs to be clear. (Different story when he's drumming, though... hrgh)

I won't lie, it's nice to be validated. Especially by someone else who can draw like damn. I've never really been into color with my art. I love ink washes and clean black and whites and stuff. India ink is way fun for washes, yeah. Though, I seem to have gravitated to this really thick matte acrylic that's the blackest black you'll ever find. It's like inking with liquid plastic or something, it goes down so smooth. I think color is to you like clothing detail is to me. I love fiddling with it and seeing how far I can push it and just playing around. It's nice. Gets my brain to check out and I can just focus.

(Rant all you like, ohman, you're not alone)

oooh, I'm so very looking forward to it! :D I don't have a favourite thing to draw these days. I used to be madly into rainbow gradients, but that was back when I used watercolour a lot. I think you're right re: you and detail being like me and colour. Colour is basically my favourite thing to play with; i like to try to figure out how to make colours that shouldn't go together, work. Balancing them with other colours, and the like, till suddenly it's pretty. I don't so much paint to create something awesome, but more, to mix colours (digital art has nothing on the fun I have mixing paint. )

Also that acrylic thing sounds pretty awesome. For inking I mostly just use my fude pens now that I'm not in uni writing japanese!essays with them every other day, i may as well use them for inking right? :D they're like, subtle!brush pens, for writing characters all tiny like, but still with the flourish brush pens give.

I know the vine dresses were... probably late last year? I assume that's ... the fall2010 collection (so like, in my spring? i get confused.)

and I think what I liked about circus was that it was so ridiculously over the top. They did not need back up dancers and huge set design, but they had it. It was theatrical, and idk, brought something extra to the show. (but I loved all their more subtle dandy!outfits too. i just like costumes? it always inspired me to like, run with it. Ryan ross dressing like a dandy just basically cemented 'bandom is for regency au art' in my head.)

Yeah, it's back there somewhere. The ridiculous fruity dude in a circus tent wearing an '06 McQueen women's jacket thing. ...I should have maybe called it the Paisley Apocalypse. /headdesk

Okay, the fact you're pro-rainbow gradient makes me way too happy. I went through a phase back in November-Decemberish where I was writing posts in rainbow html. There were threats. And yeah, you basically do with color what I do with detail/costuming. Like, how completely over-the-top can I go while still making it realistic and functional. ...Which has led to some interesting wardrobing choices in my real life, but I feel like showing up to work in head to toe chartreuse and fuchsia and still being employed at the end of the day has got to be some kind of accomplishment, right?

Oh dude, that's right! You mentioned you're doing Japanese studies. That's awesome. I did Japanese calligraphy for years, which is probably where I started getting comfortable around brushes, idk. I used to have a bunch of those pens, too. They're brilliant.

Alright, I'll harangue my roommate until she locates pictures for me. I've been running low on inspiration lately, this'll be good. (I've literally drawn my way through like, every Panic! and MCR photoshoot EVER for influence)

Yeah, I'm totally on board with the ridiculous dandy stuff, idk, it thrills me on this really base level and I kind of want all of the clothes for myself. Actually, I want pretty much all the clothes I draw too. I keep saying, when I'm rich and famous I'm gonna have a posse of seamstresses at my beck and call, and someone else following me around with a tray of tater tots at all times. I have needs.

And I kinda want to give Ryan Ross one big fucking high-five.

haha, if you had been fired for chartreuse and fuchsia, tbh you dont want to work for them! That's like being fired for being too awesome.

If you housemate can't find them harass Arabel, she is my fashion encyclopedia of awesome. I know she'll know the collection I mean. She's the one who showed me it!

Maybe you can just hire a team of seamstresses and become rich and famous selling your rad designs?

Ryro is still one of my favorites. I wasn't huge on TYV but it's kind of sad they fell through and he's the only one without a band. Kind of want to hug the boy these days.

Yeah, that was my general consensus. Besides. it's amazing what some hot pink hair dye will do for your cause if you have to be taken seriously by teenagers for a living.

Okay! Sweet, thanks. You guys are kind of awesome btw

...You make a good point. While we're at it, can we have your Gerard's coffee shop poetry outfit made? Because yeah.

I could care less about TYV. I don't think I've ever tried to listen to anything they did. I think Ryan and Jon's sour grapes fest over new Panic! was pretty tasteless. HOWEVER. I still have this massive respect-knucks urge where Ryan is concerned. Somehow his being a flaky douche translates to me as endearing and kind of hilarious. Bonus points for his fan base basically being in the throes of woe over his, like, "Downward spiral into misery and drug use and FOREVER ALONE" or whatever. Fuck that, homeboy can take care of himself, he's a grownup. But it's still really funny to see the freakouts over Tumblr and Twitter.

as a teen, brightly coloured hair ALWAYS won me over, so that makes perfect sense tbh. :D

<3 (we adopt people into our fold of artists we adore, i'm sorry, you actually have no say in this. welcome to the family. :D)

I don't know if there's enough lace in the world to do that costume justice though? Sometimes I think that would have been a nicer piece if I'd like, actually referenced lace patterns for it, made it super detailed and awesome. but then, I got lazy and went with 'squiggly lines and dots, it suggests lace!'

I bought the album, preorder, for the hilariousness that was the TYV's viewfinder that came with it. I wasn't impressed with the album though, seemed like shallow catty lyrics, and too derivitive of the beach boys or whatever for my liking.
I have never, in my life, taken Ryan Ross seriously. He is a ridiculous human being who does douchey things sometimes. I feel my love for Ryan Ross comes from the same place as my love for Kanye West. He amuses me? :D (my favourite characterisation for ryan in fic is, y'know, a flakey douche.)

Brightly colored hair and facial piercings are the best professional attire. Duh.

(Yeah, because I'm really complaining here. It's truly awful. I can't even tell you. :DDD)

Nonono, it works! Like, perfectly! I think it would be a fine line of getting too busy if it was all perfect-detail or whatever. And if there isn't enough lace, we will MAKE MORE LACE. ALL OF THE LACE.

So we're basically on the same page with Ryan Ross. And TYV. I've heard secondhand of the shallow, catty lyrics. And of Jon going on-record with major magazines talking about Brendon and Spencer being lazy (right... I mean, I'm on nobody's side, but objectively I have to notice who has hands right now and who doesn't...). They're like a cheerleading squad or something, with the drama and in-fighting. It's like some long, drawn-out reality show. Only better. Besides, Jon Walker's fictional persona in nearly every fic he's in makes me irrationally happy. His crazy cat lady/dirty old man stoner presence has saved SO MANY FICS from being totally unreadable, I can't even.

Ryan is this harmless level of douchey where it's just fun to watch and laugh about from a distance. But... I still feel a little weird about Panic!'s current lineup implementing Camisado. That just feels off. (Oh, and you wanna talk about some catty lyrics? The new Panic! stuff is mostly subtle enough to take a pass, I think, but some of their V&V b-sides. Man. ♥)

Definitely. You are the most professional of all the professional people. :D :D

(haha, well, good to know we're not being unwantedly overbearing.)

everything needs moar lace. :D (and thanks dude, i always have these grandious plans to like, make it a floral lace pattern or something, but by the time I ink it, that goes out the window. So I assume in my head, it would have looked better if I'd put the effort in?)

re: jon walker, this. all of this. J-Walks in fic is my favourite person ever. I think a lot of my affection for him IRL is stemed from fic!jon. Him and his happy stoner cat loving self, being all calm and chill and ~awesome.

I also love Tomrad in fic, if they spend most of the time mocking him for not getting when he's being creepy (taking photos of people while they sleep/going through their luggage/etc etc) - but also, I just think that dude is a rad guy. He used to send out thank you notes with Empire's merch. It was the sweetest thing.

I haven't followed what panic have been up to lately in the live seen. I know brendon's been amping up the stage gay with some dude named Dallon? that's about it. *such a half hearted fan some times.* but I agree, playing camisado/super-personal-ryan songs still is a bit... off. D:

Ikr?

(I wasn't kidding when I called myself attention-seeking. I promise.)

Nonono, it's totally working for you. ...And now I wanna go draw more lace. PSH.

Dude, RIGHT? fic!Walker is like. I can't even. I've been reading SO MANY FICS where I'm about to give up and say fuck it, I can't deal with these levels of emo, when he sweeps in and is AWESOME all over EVERYONE and all of a sudden shit's readable again. I don't even know. Fic!Ross can be pretty fucking hilarious, too. I much prefer that to the over-dramatized druggie drama queen tack. Panic!Stonerfic is pretty high up on my list of Favorite Things. Jon Walker wearing eyeliner is also on that list.

See, I haven't read NEARLY enough TAI/CS/GCH stuff. Or FOB, for that matter. If you have any fic or author recs, I'd be thrilled. [livejournal.com profile] airgiodslv is one of my favorites so far, but I need mooooore. I think I've read a total of two fics involving the Tomrad, and neither were very "fun" in the technical sense.

I was inducted into bandom by a Panic! person, which has turned into three Panic! people, so I basically know LOTS OF THINGS. It's kind of become my derpy little happy place, but I feel like I should explain that I'm not exactly... idk. Properly invested, I suppose. More like highly amused. They're fun to keep up with and a great distraction when I'm freaking out about everything else in life. I have this whole head-canon theory of like, back-and-forth snark between Ryan and Jon and Brendon and Spencer, their including Camisado being an integral part of this plot. This ties tangentially into all my "theories" about Brendon Urie's Serial Killer Alter Ego.
...He's been stage-gaying Dallon? Okay that's just weird.
(I would seriously sacrifice four hundred virgins to find out the details of the evolution in dynamics between Ryan and Spencer in the name of social science. Seriously. Virgins. Sacrifice. Lots.)

go draw lace! dooooo iiiiiit :D :D

I have a soft spot for Jon/Spencer fic, because Spencer is all high strung stress ball trying to baby sit his band and Jon's all '...dude, spencer, brendon and ryan are adults, they can look after themselves, chill out.' - basicall,y oh jwalk, come hang out with me and be chill and make everything seem less stressy.

I don't know if this side of my fandom adoration is creepy because he isn't in a band or anything, but like, I have such a huge soft spot for Nick Scimeca in fic? Like, he is just like, behind the scenes BFF with everyone in bandom, and there's this fic, where he marries his bff? that was beautiful perfection. Since that fic, I just like, smile if he shows up in a fic.

I need to rec you some fic when I'm home, fo'sure, but if you hit back up to that BBB art post I linked you and find the one named "boys in chicago" - start there. I mean, I wasn't huge on the 'panic being all married to each other with a daughter' thing, but I love JWalk, coming in to pick up his drunk bffs Tom and Nick etc, JWalk was rad in that, and it was honestly the best Tomrad fic. being mildly creepy in a well meaning way!

Oh man, I am so over invested in panic, I just haven't been keeping tabs on them as much lately. The snark kept making me sad D:
If you ever find out what's the go between Spencer and Ryan these days, I'd love to know. :D

I have EVERY INTENTION. I'm just off for the weekend and I don't get to draw again for... a distressing number of days. BALLS. Argh. But yeah. lace. It's so on.

So I'm assuming, just from that little possibly-hypothetical scene you described there, that you've read the Forever, Now series? I mostly read Spencer/Brendon, since that's what the authors I like tend to write, but I find that if the writer makes it work, I'm pretty un-picky. All I ask is- NO MORE PANIC!-FORMATION FIC, PLEASE. PLEASE, GUYS. IS IT SOME UNWRITTEN BANDOM RULE THAT EVERY AUTHOR HAS TO, AT SOME POINT, WRITE A VERSION OF THE PANIC!-FORMATION STORY? MAKE IT STOP.

I'd say it's not creepy. I mean, what- any more creepy than the idea of reading rpf to begin with? Psh, whatever. Besides, he's Mr Scene King, he basically inserts himself forcefully. ...Not that I've actually encountered any firsthand, but I hear tell, and I know what you're talking about. I have a few character-types who make me boundlessly happy at their mere mention. Side character-style Jon and Ryan, any member of Cobra, Travie, William. Like, as soon as someone mentions so much as "coffee shop" or "Starbucks" or "barefoot", I start grinning my fic!Jon grin.

Sweet! I have no idea what you've read or what you're into, but I've amassed a pretty good collection since November if you want some reciprocation. It's going to take me FOREVER to read stuff for the foreseeable future, but yeah. I have a rec list. Thank youuu.

I think the only person I could say I'm legitimately invested in as far as the bandom spectrum is concerned is Patrick Stump. Idk. He's a cool dude. Panic, however, is so fucking ENTERTAINING. I mean, everything they do- the drama, the bromance, the catty bullshit. All of it just makes this voyeuristic schadenfreude-happy part of my soul tingle with glee. I think it's very similar reasoning as to why I love working with teenagers so much. And then TAI announces a split and it turns into Beckett and The Butcher crying at each other over Twitter all day. Oh, boys.
(my interest in the Ryan-Spencer thing makes me feel a little like a creeper. It's deeply rooted in my obsession with like, people and people's brains and social shit and all the reasons I love my job, but at the same time it breaks my heart a little on this very personal level where I've had the same bff since we were six and if that got fucked up, my world would end abruptly. I don't believe for a second all that half-assed crap they mutter about "oh yeah, uh. we still hang out sometimes. shit's cool. seriously." while simultaneously having this semi-subtle cold war thing happening. What even.)

Weekend! I plan to draw so much (except tbh, I have so many social things I have to do this weekend. SIGH.)

I think it was in a LOT of fic? but i love that series a little bit, for their Brendon. I read the second one first, and had to go back and read the other one later when I knew more about MCR. Dorkball brendon = the best. But also Jon saved kittens and stuff. ~awesome.

I honest to god haven't updated my delicious since 2008, and mostly I was just saving things to read later so idek how good some of these actually are but; bandom au fic fresh off the 2008!press :D

turns out I have about nine cobra fic in that, which bites. However one of them is this gem in which Gabe meets justin Timberlake (who actually like the Gabe!character of the TheSocialNetwork fandom, it's a bit hilarious.)

This fic where Nick Scimeca plans his wedding is awesome, but the one where Nick plans Jon and Ryan's wedding is possibly even better (He has to wait to congratulate Ryan because Kanye's deep in conversation with him about clothes. "Tell me more about paisley," Kanye says and Nick thinks this is probably a good time to interrupt. I mean, really. A++)

(honestly, it just looks like all I read are ridiculous AUs that try to shoe horn all the celebrities I've ever mildly enjoyed into them. and I do. I just can't think of OTHER fic I enjoy right now? you should hit me up with fic recs too! for sure. I'll totally have more for you when I've dug out where I've been saving the book marks too)

I'm invested in panic in a way where they make me smile and I adore them for it. (and oh god, butcher leaving TAI; who will go steal shit with Sisky now!? D: so sad.)

Oh Ryan and Spencer. I really want to just continue to believe in my head that they're still friends. (there was some picture of Ryan Brendon and Spencer at a bar together they tweeted recentish-ly ago? idk, i don't follow any of them on twitter so I miss a lot of that.) and it really was just a split on a difference in musical opinions? but then they're all catty about each other and it's like they WANT to shatter my ridiculous happy!fantasy world. D:

There's a longer, vine-ier version further down in the collection, too. Also I would wear everything in Fall 2008, forever.
