Fresh Doom, anyone?
Apr. 1st, 2005 06:53 pmwow. what a night.
for those of you who werent sitting down there with me, last night was early housing registration for next year. and *eveeryone* wanted Boundary Village. i'm not kidding. we were downstairs in the O-house lobby, waiting in front of the ballroom for registration this morning at 8:30am. i got there at 5:30 yesterday evening and i was number 80 in line. from there, things only went to hell. by 8 this morning, the line went from right in front of the door, down the corridor to the end, looped around the other side of the hall, and out through the lobby, out the door, around the front of the building to the left, and then the entire length of O-house, which, for those of you who know... wow. i'd say it was at *least* 400 people. me and ashley decided that it was lunacy to even think we'd get in with the two other people who were pseudo in our group, and focused on getting a room with two spaced available (boundary has 4 bedrooms per apartment suite). let me tell you, it was a LONG night. kinda fun, in a weird way, though. our little group was sitting all in a bunch toward the end of the hallway with about four computers between us (no, i didnt bring the g5 down there. yes, i wanted to. but the laptop decided that it didnt want to screw up *too* badly and even let me play about 13 episodes of fullmetal alchemist and only error-messaged me about six times, somehow managing not to crash my computer once in the process. it was pretty nice, actually.).
this could be an incredibly long story, but it really doesnt need to be. pretty much, the main thing was the list: it was created by the guy in front of me in line, and it was just a list of groups of four people. i was the 80th person, 20th group. i pretty much knew that i wasnt gonna get all four people i was originally with in one room, so me and ash stuck together, and that was good enouh. the list ended up extending about twenty more groups beyond me, and all was well. that is, until about midnight when we'd all been there from anywhere between 6-8 hours. seven in my case. that was when a bunch of dumbasses came in and started yelling at us, telling us our list was shit and they were gonna storm the door. first off, let me clarify: there were 15 fully open rooms available. 148 spaces in all. most people were fucked. however, thats how first come, first serve goes, kiddies! suck it up and deal.
anyway, they get an r.a. to come down and yell at us that we're a fire hazard. however, we'd already got that one covered: we had a foot and a half of space down the whole hall, and all the power cords were regulation. we were fine. the r.a. got really mad and told us,"well fine, but your list means shit. it isnt official." thats when one of the guys down the hall stood up, got everyone's attention, and said, "alright. fine. its not official, but at least we're organized. who here is going by the order of the list?" every single person down the corridor raised their hand. i was impressed, not only that we were that unified, but that we were that rational and oganized, and respectful of the fact that holy shit, people had gotten there before us. it didnt matter that the list wasnt stamped with the school seal. we knew who was there and who had priority, and what the hell? they friggen *announced* that it was a first come, first serve basis.
so the people in the hall were like, "well we dont damn care. we'll storm the door, try and stop us." ...so glad to see maturity at work, people. luckily, us hall people were smarter than that. we talked amongst ourselves for a moment, and told them that if they wanted to try that, the hallway was about six feet wide, and full of two hundred people who, if stormed, would just calmly stand up, shoulder to shoulder, and hell would freeze over before anyone in the lobby would get to the ballroom door. not to mention, if they cause a riot, they're kicked out anyway.
so yeah, i guess its just nice to know that once in awhile, people can really be sort of impressively rational and organized. had that been either of my highschools, there would have been severe and immediate rioting. so i guess the lesson there is, wow, i'm glad i'm where i am.
and the happy endings are first, that fifteen minutes before the doors opened, the list was made official and gave priority to anyone early enough to be on it, and even better, me and ashley got our room!!!
we're in a room with two other people on the first floor of the first building (the best one! ha!!). also, we got the second to last set of slots available.
and i know to most of you, this is a lot of blather, but yeah... i camped for seventeen hours. no breaks except twenty minutes for a shower i desperately needed, since i got in line right after being at the gym for two hours, so yeahhh.... eeew. and then me and ashley went to parkers on a food run that took about twenty minutes.
