Ok, this poll is for my Speech class, so help me out here: I'm doing a persuasive speech on how Wal Mart or a mall would be the best places to hide in a zombie attack, but heres the catch- I need divergent points of view. So just reply and let me know where YOU think the best place to take refuge would be. (Its fine if you agree. I need support to back me, too.)

Ooooh, I just woke up from a fantastical nap and now I'm answering the poll.

Yes, I think a mall would be an excellent place of refuge.

It's big; it's locked from the inside out; there are security cameras to watch the grounds with, so you'll know what's going down; there's so much availible inside a mall, food, shelter, clothes, potential weapons, things to keep you entertained, a source of news (tv/radio), etc; Hey, it worked really good in Dawn Of The Dead remake; it's a familiar place to be...

and many more reasons...if I think of some more, I'll post them too...

A Mall would be much better than wal mart, especially if it has more than one story.
The best advantage would be being able to lock off the ground level and having a good amount of supplies to fall back on. Since zombies don't have the hand eye coordination of the living, you'd be safe anywhere with an upper level. Malls also have the advantage of auxiliary power if the main generators are busted. Malls typically have glass panels on the roof, so fire escapes leading from there would have to be detached and/or monitored at all times.
But yeah, it has ample supply of most of what you would need. The mall security would have a good back up of first aid and protective gear as well.

Tell me about it. He'd be living off mini bags of fritos and beef jerky sold in those places.

Yeah and if that doesn't kill him first, he gets to look forward to slowing starving to death or being killed by zombies...

The mall's a good place, but if I were attacked here in Statesboro, it would have to be the Walmart(right NEAR the mall) with the Lowe's across the street from it. The mall is totally lame here and has nothing really worth being in there for. Walmart's totally self-sustaining for the first wave, and then after that we can hit up Lowe's and fortify ourselves properly with turrets and walls and other fortifications. Yes, I've thought about this in depth before.

Oh, and guns? They're not the best way to kill a zombie by far. YOu just can't really mow down zombies. You gotta get at their brains. So spray until they're within range, and then bludgeon to death. Yes.

Your right, semi autos are the only guns worthwhile against zombies. Close range we could go with shovels and crowbars.

I'd much prefer crafting my own zombie destroying weapon. It'd just be one hell of a badass looking mace. *grins* An excuse to make myself a weapon...yes... ;)

So I guess I'll dare to be different and say an Army base.
Weapons - Check
Food - Check
Supplies - Check
Assault vehicles, bomb shelter, and most other things you could think of also at your disposal.

But if I had to choose between Hilo Wal-mart or the mall,
I'd choose the mall... less chance of me running into people I'd rather not see...

Chances are that Hilo zombies would be really dumb,
and we could blow most of them to peices in a fairly short amount of time.

Update on how your speech goes, and good luck!

Come on, he'd all be a zombie and you could womp him and shit!
But both the mall and walmart here could be horrible bases.
You're right, army base would be perfect, especially here. Difficult location, high altitude. It would make it hard for them to stumble on.

Or you could just pretend he's a zombie anyway....

Dammit

Didn't notice this one before, and Jess beat me to putting down my vote for army base. Defenses would be wicked, and 'guns' don't only shoot bullets. Explosions rip anything apart, sandbagged sniping points, mines, high vantage points, stocked food stores, communications, heavy transport vehicles(you don't even need to use the cannon, what the hell is tipping over a freaking AATV?)

I also have to disagree on weapon selection, I would go with one of these new fangled 12 gauges. A USAS-12 or something, semi-automatic with 28 round magazines? That'll take off anythings head and even knock the rest back. Surrounded? Its semi-auto! Sure, a cudgel is needed for a backup weapon if anything should happen to the shotty but surrounded or even cramped quarters makes melee interesting against a horde of opponents.

Malls are short sighted in the sense that it'll only sustain a few people for a short while. A warehouse district with a power/processing plant as a forward base of operations(catwalks to fire down from, traps, somewhat fortified already) that could extend to other places that will have large stores of canned/frozen/refigerated food and thick walls and industrial tools to reinforce these locations with. You could also close down the ground level and construct more traps and makeshift catwalks to connect everything with so if a large group came, you could go into "lockdown". The plant would be a good staging area to defend and make necessary raids from at first. Other buildings could be set up to specialized areas, hostel-like structures for example.

It'll be a bit more dicey initially than a mall and requires a few others, but this comes from someone who doesn't expect anybody else to save him and a very "man and his castle" point of view. Only thing better than a moat is an electrified moat.

If I was by myself and didn't encounter/couldn't contact any other humans, I'd stop by a gun and foodstuff shop and then get on a boat asap. Benefit is its nigh invulnerable to them, and you can fish for your food and scout out possible fortifications with relative ease and safety.

Wow, ok, that was a few minutes well spent.
